The &#8220;7th weapon&#8221; is a victim of its own success (the Battle of Algiers), but also of the ideological drift of its supporters. The institutionalisation of revolutionary warfare gradually transformed the army into a veritable state within a state, coexisting with civilian political power and increasingly encroaching on its areas of responsibility. It contributed to the fall of the Fourth Republic.
